Thunder Jackets for Dogs

Thunder jackets are a popular option among dog owners. If you’ve never seen one, they essentially look like a type of dog-vest-shirt, and come in a variety of sizes, designs, and colors. However, they are more than just a fashion statement. Thunder jackets can be extremely beneficial for your dog.

What purpose do they serve?

As you may assume, a common application for thunder jackets is…thunder. They were first designed to address nervousness associated with storms and loud noises, both of which a majority of dogs’ struggle with. The tight-fitting thunder jackets are thought to bring comfort and security in your dog’s most vulnerable moments. Just like a big hug, the jackets make the dogs feel as if they are being consoled and are not alone in the moment.

And while the name may suggest otherwise, thunder jackets help with more than just the occasional bad weather:

  • General stress
  • Meeting new people and pets
  • Adjusting to new environments
  • Kennel stays
  • Separation
  • Loud noises (fireworks, etc.)

Not all dogs are scared of thunder, but that doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from a thunder jacket. In fact, the issues listed above are often more common situations than thunderstorms themselves. If you have a dog who has nervous tendencies, or struggles with situational stress, the security of a thunder jacket can help.

Alternatives & Supplements

Are there any alternatives, or products you can supplement with thunder jackets? The short answer is, yes.

For dogs who do not like getting clothes put on them, thunder jackets can be a challenge. Even though your dog may be suffering from fearfulness or nervousness, the thought of being wrapped up in a foreign fabric can make their afflictions worse. As an alternative, CBD oil can be an effective option for your dog, promoting calmness and helping address their discomfort. Another potential alternative to try is therapeutic music. It has been found that classical music can actually help with calming dogs and putting their mind at ease. This can be a perfect choice for those of you who have to leave your dog at home alone for extended periods of time.

For dogs who might not mind wearing one, or already have a thunder jacket that works for them, supplementing it can be even more beneficial. Just as CBD oil can be a great alternative, it’s especially effective as a supplement. For those times your dog needs extra relief, or is in store for a hectic day, CBD oil and a thunder jacket could be the perfect pair to remedy your dog’s discomfort and stress.

It’s interesting to note that a majority of smaller dogs can be especially susceptible to nervous tendencies. Not for a necessarily complicated reason, it’s just the fact they are so small compared to everything around them. In turn, when some smaller dogs hear loud noises, or are confronted by unfamiliar (and bigger) people and dogs, the feelings of uneasiness can intensify. A thunder jacket could help them feel more secure and protected in these situations.

Cost

Thunder jackets (sometimes called thunder shirts) generally range anywhere between $20-$60, depending on brand and size. For dogs who benefit, this is a no brainer purchase for pet owners. The affordability is a welcome sign compared to potentially frequent vet visits trying to address your dog’s fearfulness and discomfort.

Do all dogs benefit?

Dog remedies are often subjective. Not because they don’t work, but because every dog is different, and much of the feedback about thunder jackets for example, comes from pet owners themselves. While a thunder jacket has “done wonders” for one dog, another dog may not benefit at all.

As for the question, is it right for my dog? There’s only way to find out! If you’re dog has nervous tendencies, or you’re looking for a way to combat their fearfulness in certain situations, a thunder jacket may be a viable option. And don’t forget, CBD can be a great supplement, especially when it comes to addressing situational discomfort.
